This past week Stats SA reported that the #Q1GDP figures for the country show that the economy has contracted by 2%. However, as we know, similarly to the unemployment rate this is not an accurate figure in terms of where the economy is currently. A 7.2% contraction is expected for 2020, which is said to be the largest contraction in nearly 90 years. While other countries are putting together strategies to save jobs with millions of dollars pumped into their respective economies, we keep hoping for something radical for our economy to desperately save jobs and help stimulate the economy. However, it looks like we will be waiting for a long time.
In the meantime, we keep seeing the number of #Covid19 cases and death toll increase both locally and globally. While we continue to practice the basic requirements of wearing masks, washing hands, coughing into our elbows, and social distancing. Similarly, instances like the impasse between the taxis and government this past week do not help the current situation. The decision of some of the taxi drivers to load their taxis 100% instead of 70% as per the lockdown regulations did not help the cause. Needless to say that this decision impacts all of us whether you travel by taxi or not. This has a long-term effect on the economy and labour force.
We are now at a time when we can no longer keep looking around for someone else to bring us solutions for the many ailments in our lives. We have to figure out what are some of the things that we can do to change the circumstances in our lives. In addition to up-skilling ourselves in preparation for the impending change post #Covid19, what are some of the things that we can do today to make our personal circumstances better? One of the key drivers of an economy is #entrepreneurship. I think we need to start thinking of ourselves as little empires. The times of waiting for someone to give you a job are fading fast because jobs have become scarce. #TDJakes always speaks of having multiple streams of income. If you have not started thinking about multiple streams of income, this has never been a better time to do so. What is that one business that you have always wanted to start but never could or never did? Some of us keep putting off our dreams for later until it is too late. What are some of the things that you can start doing now that can position you in that direction? It does not have to be major steps. You can start small and take it from there.
Meanwhile, we also have to start looking at ways of how we can support each other. There is so much negativity right now; we need to offset it. This week, let us look around at the people around us at our workplaces and at home and show them that we value and appreciate them. Have an amazing week ahead!
