Telecommuting Amidst Covid-19

While in the process of wrapping our minds around 4IR and preparing for the changing world of work, Covid – 19 came and accelerated the change. It became a disruption that we had not anticipated. While many companies had already implemented the remote work policy, many had not. I think one of the biggest challenges that we will see arise with remote work is managing the performance of employees. We know that it is challenging enough to manage the work performance of employees who are with you in the office. What more when you do not see them around the office? The concept of managing employees on output as opposed to input has become a reality for some managers sooner than they had anticipated. This is a definite mindset change for all of us, especially a challenge for employees who are not accustomed to working remotely. Also, usually under non-Covid – 19 circumstances, working from home works better when the kids are at school for those with children. One of the challenges that most people are experiencing is managing your work and work space at home while managing the children and their play space. These lines often become blurred.
