Coaching Achieves Results

The word “coach” always conjures up such pleasant memories for me. It takes me back to my #HoodCollege days when I joined the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Teams. I vividly remember when the #coach told the team to run five miles (eight kilometres) around the neighbourhood after our first Field Hockey practice for the season, I thought I was going to pass out. I was so out of shape that I was the last one of my teammates to run out of the gates into the street. The #Coach was expecting a baby at the time, so she followed the team on the run on her bicycle. Needless to say that she was riding on my side as I was panting and feeling like my heart was about to explode out of my chest. All I could hear as I was slowly trotting was her saying, “Come on Kholeka, you can do it.” All I wanted to do was to sit on the sidewalk and skip the run altogether because I could not see myself running for eight kilometres. She stuck with me throughout that first run. Occasionally, she would ride ahead to check on the rest of the team, and then she would return to give me words of encouragement and tell me how to control my breathing throughout the run. That day, she rode beside me until I had completed the run. It was the first time that I had jogged for that long in my life! At the end of the run, even though I ached everywhere, the feeling was exhilarating. I wanted to do it again! By the end of the season, I was jogging and keeping up with the rest of the team. To top it off, I was in the best fitness shape I had ever been.
